Every time you unfold your Brompton, the hinge clamp plate drops out of alignment. Before you can ride, you have to manually reposition it and fiddle it back into place while tightening the bolt. This small spring sits inside the clamp housing and holds the plate in perfect parallel alignment — so when you're ready to go, you just screw straight in. No repositioning, no fiddling. How it works
The spring clips into the hinge clamp housing on your Brompton's stem and frame. It holds the clamp plate pushed slightly away from the hinge in the correct parallel position — so it never drops or rotates out of place when loosened. When you're ready to ride, the plate is already aligned and waiting. You screw straight in, lock the hinge, and go. No adjusting, no tapping the clamp back into position.
The same applies when folding — the clamp releases cleanly and stays put rather than swinging loose. Over time this also reduces the wear and paint damage that comes from a misaligned clamp knocking against the frame.
One important installation note: insert the spring with the long end facing toward the clamp, and make sure the fold-notch faces outward. Get those two things right and it works perfectly.

How do I install it?
Remove the clamp bolt and slide the old spring out of the housing. Insert the new spring with the long end facing toward the clamp. Make sure the fold-notch faces outward — this is the step most people get wrong, and it affects how smoothly the clamp moves. Refit the bolt and you're done.
